Hot Design Tips for Electric Fireplaces
Interior design can be challenging if you don’t know what accessories are available. Some would just assume that if there isn’t a fireplace built into a room, then that’s just one less design choice they can make. However, with electric fireplaces you can make big changes to the function and look of a room without any reconstruction. They can fulfill multiple design functions and add warmth with style to any room.
Large, empty wall space just begs to be used. Electric fireplaces are a great way to use that space and provide a focal point for the room. Placing an electric fireplace in a seating area or a parlor allows for meaningful, as opposed to arbitrary, seating arrangements. Also, the mantle provides a surface for displaying other decorative items, such as picture frames and artistic trinkets. With such easy installations, placing an electric fireplace is mostly an interior design decision, not a construction project.

Basic Kitchen Floor Plans
The floor plan is seldom a homeowner’s first concern when designing a kitchen. Often, they’re more concerned about countertop materials, color schemes, furniture, and flooring options. But remember, the kitchen is primarily a place to work—and to do that, you need more than the aesthetic elements. A functional kitchen starts with a good floor plan, one that lets you get the work done efficiently and makes the most out of the space you have. Once you have everything in place, design ideas for kitchens are just a matter of personal taste.
So what makes a good kitchen floor plan? It all depends on how you work in the kitchen, how much space you have, and how much traffic it gets from day to day. That’s why the first step is to know your lifestyle, and adapt your kitchen design to suit it.
Experts recommend four basic kitchen layouts: single-wall, galley, L-shaped, and U-shaped. Each one has its own pros and cons for every homeowner. Read on for a quick description of each type and what they can do for you.
Single-wall kitchens
A single-wall kitchen, as the name suggests, puts everything flush against one wall. This is usually recommended for small kitchens, as it helps maintain an efficient workflow and minimize footwork at the same time. Since everything is linear, there’s no need to walk across the room all the time, which keeps traffic out of the way. In place of the kitchen work triangle, plan it so that the work flows smoothly from storage and preparation (fridge and cabinets) to cooking and serving areas (stove, counter, microwave).
One thing you have to keep in mind is that single-wall kitchens offer limited counter space. With all the appliances lined up on the counter, one can easily run out of room for cutting, chopping and other basic tasks. To avoid this, you can add a rolling island cart to hold some less frequently used items. If you need more workspace, a pull-out work surface or cutting board may be a good choice.
Galley kitchens
Also called a corridor kitchen, this layout consists of two counters or work surfaces on walls facing opposite each other. This makes an excellent foundation for the work triangle: you’ve got two points (the sink and stove) on one side and one point (the fridge) on the other. And with two countertops, you also have significantly more work space and more room to store frequently used items like the microwave, toaster, or coffeemaker.
One of the main drawbacks of a galley kitchen is managing the foot traffic. If you have a door at one end of the galley or more on the sides, it turns your kitchen into a major traffic route, and there’s always the risk of bumping into someone while holding a hot pot. Avoid this by placing commonly accessed points (like the fridge or water cooler) near the entrance, so that people don’t have to walk all the way in to get what they need.
L-shaped kitchens
Designers have long favored L-shaped kitchens for their flexibility and space-saving potential. The L corner makes a perfectly natural point for the work triangle, and by keeping it compact, you can keep the rest of the kitchen open while steering clear of traffic. Avoid putting kitchen sinks and taps in the corner, as this limits usage to one person at a time. Instead, place them on one of the sides or “legs” of the triangle, with the stove just within reaching distance.
If you’re using the corner for storage, make sure to use it wisely—many people miss the space at the back of corner cabinets and leave the front overcrowded. Avoid “dead space” by using the corner for seldom-used items, such as food processors. Also, make sure to keep the L compact: if it gets too big, there’ll be a lot of walking involved and you’ll risk inviting more traffic into your workspace.
U-shaped kitchens
These kitchens offer the most counter space and often the most work-efficient designs. Like the galley kitchen, it keeps everything close together without limiting personal space. It also solves the galley’s traffic problem by closing off one end of the corridor. It’s also pretty easy to improvise: you can just turn a galley kitchen into a U-shape by adding a table at one end, or an L-shaped kitchen by adding a kitchen island to one side.
Since the U-shape involves two corners, managing your space can be tricky. You don’t want to end up with two dead-space cabinets or hard-to-reach appliances. The U-shape usually works best for large, busy kitchens that need lots of counter space. If you don’t need a lot of room, the L-shaped or galley design may be more appropriate. You can simply turn some of the counter space into a bar or use the shorter end for storage.

Courtyard Gardens – A Buffer Between Your Home And The World
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4
Ideally, your home should be your sanctuary, hide away, retreat, or even paradise. But, what do you see right as you step out of your main door? Do you see a concrete jungle or a soothing green space, which in short, is an extension of that paradise? Whatever you see, there are no guess that you would rather see a green well decorated courtyard, garden, or patio courtyard idea. Given this scenario, a decorated courtyard can be the perfect solution for you.
The Courtyard has been rightly identified as the ‘buffer’ between the world outside and inside the house. Naturally, if the courtyard is part of the front yard landscaping ideas it is important that it is classy and reflects your taste. If you are looking to create a cozy atmosphere, you can place outdoor fireplaces and wooden chairs. A Zen garden with fountain or ponds would add to the serenity of the garden.
It’s not necessary that the courtyard be situated right in front of the house. At times they might be behind the closed doors and function as a private space. Again, some courtyards are situated even in the center of the house. However, regardless of the position, they all serve one common purpose – to provide you with an open vacant space that if decorated tastefully can create a lasting impression. In fact, while decorating the Courtyard you have to decide what kind of impression you want to make on the visitors and select your theme accordingly.
There’s no reason to give up if your old courtyard does not have the look that you want. There is always the chance to create new landscaping plans and refurbish it into a new creation. However, while designing the old courtyard, it is very important to consider space management. You have to take care that the garden is not boxed in, cramped, and claustrophobic.
At the same time, it’s also essential to provide proper enclosure as this will help you to combat harsh weather conditions. A temporary roof for the winter can be a good choice indeed. Ensure abundance of lights as this would create a welcome ambience. To make the courtyard a natural and integral part of the house, it is important to make sure that the décor in the courtyard corresponds to the color, style and material of the house. So select the paint, accessories and furniture in a fashion that complements your home décor.
It is a good idea to add green potted plants in ornamental containers in your courtyard as this can allow you to create a soothing green space. Select the plants depending on the climate of the place and maintenance facilities available. A well decorated courtyard can be your own personal oasis where you can relax after a hard days work. At the same time, it can also be the perfect place in your house to throw a casual private party. Whatever be your use of this space in house, make sure that you plan the décor keeping in mind the functionality associated with it.
You can refurbish your old courtyard as per your taste or even add a new courtyard to your house. However make sure that you personalize the décor to suit your needs and preferences. Start by selecting a theme. Make sure that this theme matches the décor of the rest of the house or complements it. Then select the right furniture and accessories that go with the theme. Remember a courtyard, if situated in the front of your house, is often the first impression that a visitor has of your place. So take proper care to make sure that it well decorated and reflects your taste in décor.

Cleaning Marble
As a cleaning process, cleaning marble can affect both your health and the appearance of your house. How you get it done and what kind of product you use are the determining factors of its effects. Based on those two and other elements of the process, the cleaning can either be effective or ineffective and safe or unsafe.
And so to clean marble effectively, the steps involved in executing the process and picking the product that you will have to use must be carried out effectively. That can be done by following certain rules. Just like with any other processes those rules help ensure the general positive outcomes of cleaning marble.
Generally though, those rules are unwritten. You are not really imposed to do or implement them. However, if your goal is to make your marble cleaning as effective and safe as possible, they must be properly observed. And by properly, that means correctly in every cleaning marble process that you have to execute.
Observing those rules, in a general sense, is an added work. You will need more time to get it all executed. At times, it may also need additional spending. Nevertheless, the effectiveness and the safety it can give to the process in return make it all worth it.
And here is the list of those unwritten rules.
-
Rule#1 – Use green cleaning products. They present less health and environmental threats therefore they are safer to use. Though they may costs higher than the conventional cleaners, they can give more benefits as they can protect your health and that of others without being ineffective in the process.
-
Rule#2 – Never use vinegar as an alternative cleaner. True, it can be used all around the house. However, to use it to clean marble will bring damages such as discoloration and etching instead of help. Mainly, it is because of its high acid content which makes other acidic household cleaners like lemon juice also a a threat to the marble surface.
-
Rule#3 – Clean stains and spills as soon as possible. The faster you get to clean them the easier it would be as they can harden over time and penetrate deeper into the marble surface. It is also possible for fresh stains to be removed just by warm water and washing soap which means you won’t need to purchase a cleaning product to remove it.
-
Rule#4 – Clean marble daily. Dust can inhibit the marble surface everyday and it can accumulate over time. Like stains and spills, it can also harden and cause damages that may be difficult to remove.
-
Rule#5 – Seal marble after cleaning. This gives extra protection to the marble surface preventing discoloration, markings and deep scratches. In addition, it makes your marble surface more appealing as it gives a well-polished look to it.
In cleaning marble, following certain rules can help the process become more effective. Though those rules are unwritten, they still must be observed. Specifically, it is a way to ensure the safe and effective implementation of every step.

Landscaping – How to Care For and Maintain Your Landscaping
Landscaping can add value to your house and should be considered an investment. Properly caring for your landscape is important, otherwise your beautiful yard will quickly become an eye sore. In order to properly maintain your landscape design, garden, or lawn, you need to understand the needs of each of the different elements involved, such as what type of nutrients and pH levels they need and how much water they should receive. Familiarizing yourself with your landscapes requirements is the best way to ensure that you properly maintain your landscape and, thus, can enjoy it for years to come.
The pH level of your soil will determine how well your landscaping will do. Different plants require different pH levels, so it is important to pick plants that all require pH levels within the same range. While plant requirements can vary, a pH range from 6.0 to 7.0 will accommodate the largest variety of plants. Check your soils pH level periodically and make any necessary adjustments. Depending on where you live, you may never have a problem maintaining the proper pH levels for your plants, but some areas will required soil treatments to keep the levels consistent.
Water is also an important part of caring for your landscape. Again, the specific needs of your landscaping will depend on the area in which you live and the requirements of the plants you choose. Some areas receive enough rain that homeowners seldom have to worry about watering the plants in their landscape. Other areas receive little rain, forcing landscaping and gardens to consist primarily of cacti and other hardy plants or requiring frequent watering. Make sure you know the individual requirements of your plants so that you can provide them with the correct amount of water. Too much water is just as damaging as too little water. If you do need to water, remember to water slowly to allow optimal absorption. You should also water when the air is cool; in the evenings is the best time. Be sure to take into account the amount of rainfall and adjust your watering schedule accordingly. An irrigation system will simplify watering if you choose to use one.
Fertilizing is another important maintenance element. You should properly fertilize the soil before you install your landscaping according to what your individual plants require. You should avoid fertilizing again for at least 30 days after installation. Most landscaping will benefit from fertilization four times a year. Remember to never fertilize your landscaping when the ground is dry; always apply fertilizer when the ground is wet. Remember that some plants will require more or less fertilization, so make sure you are familiar with your landscaping requirements.
Maintaining your landscape should be a labor of love, not just another task you have to complete. Keeping this in mind, make sure you choose plants for your landscaping or garden design ideas that require a level of maintenance you are comfortable with. While pH, water, and fertilizer are the most important parts of a maintenance routine, your landscapes requirements will vary depending on which plants you choose to use. Make sure you know exactly what your landscape will require before you install it. The more familiar you are with how to properly care for your landscape, the better your landscape will thrive.

The best thing about the cupcake trend is that it gives you free rein over the look and feel of each piece. Part of the fun is in the decorating: you can make them look like flowers, animals, Easter eggs, whatever you feel like. When you’re making them for fun, it doesn’t even have to look good—it just has to be your own. People are sure to appreciate the time and effort you put into it. Read on for some cool ideas you can use for your next cupcake project.
Get ideas from classic favorites.
Sure, cupcake recipes are basically just miniature versions of cakes. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get inspiration from other recipes. If you or your kids love gingersnaps, why not try making gingerbread cupcakes? Gingerbread is one of those flavors that just scream "comfort food"—it’s sweet, rich, and always deliciously warm. You can even make them to look like gingerbread men, or add some cream cheese frosting (although they’re pretty good on their own).
If you’re still strapped for ideas, try recreating fancy cake flavors in cupcake form. Carrot cupcakes make excellent snacks for friends, and black forest cupcakes would be perfect for a wedding or bridal shower. You don’t even have to change the recipe—just use the exact same mix and jazz it up with your choice of topping or frosting. Even if the flavor’s the same, with the right decoration and arrangement you can still make it feel like new.
Add a twist to simple flavors.
So you want to play it safe with a simple flavor like chocolate or vanilla, but you don’t want it to be too plain. What you can do is throw in a contrasting flavor to better bring out the taste. Instead of the usual chocolate cupcakes, try a chocolate mint cupcake recipe. The tart, tangy taste of peppermint helps highlight the sweet creaminess of the chocolate, and the result is unique blend that has everyone coming back for seconds.
Another way to jazz up plain cupcakes is to add in some fruit bits. Classic flavors are classic because they go with pretty much anything, so you can experiment all you like. Mix in some cherries, strawberries, or blueberries, or even use all of them together. It’s a great way to add color and variety to your cupcakes, not to mention add another layer of flavor.
Get creative with the toppings.
Often, what really set a cupcake apart are the decorations that go on top of it. And the most obvious way to decorate your cupcakes is with frosting or icing—that creamy and often colorful stuff that you spread over each cake. Cupcake icing is as much decorative as it is functional—it helps bring out the flavor of the cake itself while adding a nice splash of color to make the cake more appetizing.
When applying icing, make sure to let the cupcakes cool down beforehand. Otherwise, the heat will just melt the icing and cause it to drip down the sides. For a smoother finish, brush off any crumbs from the top of the cake so they don’t make bumps on the icing. You can make your own using butter, cream, and some icing sugar, or if you’re in a hurry, just grab some ready-made icing from the store and add in some food color.
Use high-quality liners.
Most bakers don’t put much thought into lining the pans, but it affects your finished product more than you think. Cupcake papers, for example, are more than just a decorative holder for your cakes—they also keep them from sticking to the pan and make them easier to pull out. While you can just line the pans with butter or oil, it’s not as neat and there’s still a chance that the batter will stick.
The papers are also a great way to enhance your cupcake’s presentation. After all, if you spent time decorating the cake, it makes sense to go the extra mile and serve it just as creatively. Most shops now offer cupcake liners in various colors and patterns, including seasonal ones for Christmas, Halloween, Easter, and other occasions. You can even get metallic ones if you want to put a bit of sparkle on the table.

Flooring for Small Homes
Small homes present a wide array of challenges, from color coordination to personal space management. But one of the least discussed aspects of small home design is flooring. Come to think of it, there’s a flooring guide for just about any space, but very few are dedicated to small homes. And with more and more people adapting the "condo life," it’s high time the companies started offering floors designed to make the most of a limited space. Fortunately, there are a few options, and most of them are quite affordable.
Floors for small homes have two purposes: to make the room look bigger, and to better handle the increased traffic. Because traffic is less spread out, small spaces have more "abused" floors than larger homes. You want your flooring to stand up to this abuse and without losing form or color. And since small home dwellers tend to be up and about, the floors also have to be easy to maintain. If you’re not sure what to look for, here are a few suggestions you may want to look up.
Wood
Most of us associate wood flooring with large, sprawling living rooms or sleek Asian-inspired homes. But while it looks good in these settings, it also has its place in more modest spaces. In fact, wood floors are becoming a popular addition to apartments and condos. There’s something about the look and feel of wood that warms up any space and makes it look welcoming, regardless of the size. And when you’ve got a small room, it can’t hurt to give it that homey atmosphere.
Lighter shades of wood work best for small homes, especially when paired with pastel colors like pink or peach. Pair it with dark wood furniture for contrast, or use darker accents on the walls or cornicing. If you have the budget, try looking for solid wood floors—they’re a lot more durable and able to withstand regular traffic. Most wood floors come with a protective seal, and you may have to reseal them once in a while to protect the surface.
Laminate
Laminate is a popular alternative to wood, not only because it’s cheaper but also because it takes less work. The planks are made from layers of kraft board or recycled wood chips, and a urethane coating provides a hard, solid surface just like solid wood. However, quality varies greatly from one manufacturer to another. If you don’t know how to choose laminate flooring, you might end up with an inferior floor that cracks after a few months.
If you like the feel of genuine hardwood, look for thicker planks. Most laminate floors are between 6mm and 12mm thick, and you’d be surprised at the difference a few extra layers can make. Thicker planks feel and sound more solid, and most people can’t even tell it’s not real wood. Also make sure to check for the warranty—it’s typically 10 years, but some brands offer as little as five years or as much as 30. If you plan to live in your space for a long time, you may want to get an extended warranty.
Vinyl
When you think of vinyl floors, you probably think of 60s or 70s-style homes with those loud patterns and funny color combinations. But that’s no longer the case with vinyl flooring. Vinyl floors now come in virtually every color and pattern, from plain solid colors to realistic wood and stone prints. Some are so finely made that you can’t even tell they’re vinyl unless you try to peel them off.
Like laminate, vinyl is available in various thicknesses. Generally, the thicker the material, the better it is in terms of durability and comfort. Obviously they’ll also cost more, but when it comes to flooring, it pays to invest in quality. And even so, vinyl is one of the most affordable flooring materials around—you can get a decent quality floor with a stylish print for as little as $2 per square foot.
Rugs and carpets
Carpets are probably the last thing you’d think of for a small home, but they’re more suitable than you think. They add a soft, cozy glow to the room and help pad your floor against scratches and impact. If you’re not sure about it, start with carpet tiles—they’re easier to fit and usually less expensive than full carpeting.
Another alternative that’s equally stylish are area rugs. Rugs give you the same comfort and coziness as carpets, but with added flexibility and a wider range of design choices. Try placing a rug under your furniture to better define the area, or place one in the middle of the floor to serve as a focal point. If you have a color theme going, an area rug in a complementary color is also a great way to tie it together.

Crock Pots for Budget Parties
Nothing beats a good party with good food, but sometimes we just don’t have enough to go around. With the economy tanking, having an extravagant party simply isn’t practical. But if you’re planning a party on a budget, the last thing you want is to scrimp on the menu. Fortunately, you don’t have to—there are lots of ways to cut down on your spending without compromising the food you serve. One of the best solutions is to use crock pot recipes—dishes cooked slowly over low heat instead of the usual stovetop method.
But what makes the crock pot so economical? It does sound funny: since you’re cooking for long hours, certainly you’d be spending more on energy that you’re saving on food. But studies have shown that eight hours of low heat still uses less power than a few minutes on the stove. And since the crock pot does most of the work for you, you get more time to attend to other party details. By the time it’s ready, all you have to do is enjoy the good company.
Still not convinced? Here are some ways the crock pot can save your next party.
Use chicken recipes
Chicken is one of the best meats to use in the crock pot, not to mention the cheapest. Sure, a nice hunk of roast beef may be fancier, but crock pot chicken recipes also leave a lot of room for creativity. Because it has a lot of flavor, it mixes readily with other ingredients and goes with pretty much any party theme. You can add any spice or vegetable you like, or just make a simple chicken roast. And since it cooks easily, it’s very safe even with the low heat option.
You can usually put the chicken in raw, but some people like to brown the outsides a bit before slow cooking. This helps seal in the flavor and keeps the chicken from getting dry. Just make sure the chicken doesn’t get overcooked, as it will get dry and rubbery. Usually, just a few seconds on the pan is enough to seal the edges. You can also remove the skins before cooking to reduce the fat content.
Serve soup appetizers
Start your guests off with a nice appetizer to kick off the meal. Soups are one of the most popular crock pot dishes because the low heat coaxes most of the flavor out of the food. Try experimenting with different mixes, such as zucchini and potato crock pot soup. The crisp, fresh taste of zucchini contrasts well with the starchy texture of potatoes, so it’s a nice way to get your taste buds working. You can use chicken stock for added flavor, or vegetable stock if you want to go entirely vegetarian.
Your main choice in crock pot soups is whether to make it rich or light. It all depends on the rest of your menu. If you main dish is something heavy like turkey or lamb, a lighter soup may be more appropriate. But if you’re serving mostly salads and finger foods, you can go for a thicker, creamier soup. You can also serve it as a side dish instead of an appetizer, as long as it goes well with the other courses.
Go for old favorites
Some dishes seem to be made specifically for parties because they yield a lot of food for less. One of these is ham—you can use it anywhere from a casual brunch to a fancy dinner. Crock pot ham is probably one of the cheapest and easiest slow cooker recipes. Since it’s so easy to customize the taste, it’s a surefire way to please all your guests. It’s especially good as an alternative to roasts, as pork is one of the most affordable meats in the market.
Cooking ham in the crock pot requires a good estimate of the proportion between the meat and the liquid. Too much water and the meat may get mushy, too little and it may not cook evenly. For a regular-sized piece, a good average is about one-third of the pot. Cooking times vary depending on the recipe, but you can expect anywhere from 6 to 9 hours. Make sure to check regularly to make sure it doesn’t overcook.
Finish off with a crock pot dessert
Desserts are probably the last thing you’d think of making in a crock pot, but it’s actually a good idea. Crock pot desserts are often fruit-based, so they’re a lot healthier than traditional desserts like ice cream and cake. Peach cobbler, baked apples, and custard are some of the most popular slow cooker desserts. For a really special treat, try making some crock pot custard—it’s easier than it sounds, but the results are always impressive. It’s best to use a smaller crock pot for desserts, but if you don’t have one, just adjust the amount of liquid so it doesn’t get too runny.

What is Dammar Varnish?
There are three useful soft gum varnishes. The best known of the clear or transparent varnishes commonly sold on the American market is called dammar varnish. This resin, classed as a soft resin, comes from the East Indies, is harder than rosin, but is much softer than are the copals in general.
Dammar resin is frequently dissolved in turpentine in which substance it is almost completely soluble. While, if alcohol is the solvent, there is about 29 percent of residue remaining which is insoluble. Other solvents which are sometimes used in dammar varnishes are carbon tetrachloride, benzine, heavy naphtha 48°, and heavy benzol.
Dammar varnish, when spread upon a surface such as corner protectors, corner guards, or wall protectors, does not show the brilliancy of a shellac finish, nor does it have the durability of good fixed oil varnishes which include linseed oil or some other drying-oil in their composition. In such finishes, the turpentine, alcohol, or other volatile solvent dries out leaving a thin film consisting of the gum or gums spread over the surface.
Like other spirit varnishes, dammar varnish dries rapidly, because the solvents used evaporate quickly leaving a rather glossy and moderately hard film. Dammar varnish is used on light or white surfaces at times in place of a fixed-oil varnish, which would usually slightly darken the tone on account of the presence of drying oils. The film or coat left by applying dammar varnish is not very durable because the resin becomes weak in cohesion and gradually rubs off.
This varnish should be applied quickly, even though shellac flows over a surface because it dries quite rapidly after being spread with a brush. Dammar varnish, with its greater transparency as compared with oil varnishes or even shellac, is used occasionally when it is necessary to preserve the natural color of wood or other materials, such as with corner blocks, plinth blocks, or pediment caps.
A few year ago, when burnt wood designs or decorations in pyrography were popular, dammar varnish was often used for finishing boxes, plates, wastebaskets, and other small articles of basswood or holly in order to keep the unburned portions of the designs as light in tone as possible.
This varnish has been used rather largely by paint manufacturers to impart a gloss to paints and is sometimes mixed with zinc white in the preparation of white enamels because it contains no linseed oil which is apt to turn yellow with long exposure to light, such as with window toppers, door toppers, and pediment entry.
Dammar-resin is produced by various living pinaceous trees of the genus Dammara, which grow in the East Indies chiefly, and to a minor extent in Australia and New Zealand. The best dammar-resin comes in five grades from the Dutch island of Java, and is known as Batavia from the name of the colony’s capital city. Other dammar resins sold on the market are shipped from Padang, Sumatra, Borneo, and Singapore.
Dammar is made up in varying proportions of resin and solvent, the following being suggestive:
· Dammar gum, Batavia Grade A, government standard, or Singapore dammar gum, 41/2 to 5 parts.
· Turpentine, 6 parts.
Transparent Picture Varnish is made up of:
· Dammar (pale gum), 12 parts.
· Camphor gum, 1 part.
· Turpentine, 25 parts.
A tougher more elastic dammar varnish contains:
· Dammar (Singapore, or Grade A, Batavia), 2 parts (by weight).
· Sandarac, 1 part.
· Mastic, 1/5 part.
· Turpentine, 4 parts.
The following is a United States Navy Department (52V2a, 1914) specification for dammar varnish
“To consist exclusively of a solution of pure dammar resin in petroleum spirits (turpentine substitute) and to be absolutely free from all foreign matter. To contain not less than 55 percent nor more than GO per cent by volume of petroleum spirits.”

Grow Tomatoes in Your Garden
We will take a look at some different approaches to growing tomatoes in your home garden. Some of these approaches are not necessarily limited to just the typical outside garden.
Some of the best tomato growing tips include the idea of not even using the garden. If you are living in a high rise setting or simply a small house without a yard, there are still ways to grow tomatoes, be it on a balcony or just out on the patio.
There are the traditional approaches to container gardening. This would include things like self watering containers, which take some of the worry about container growing vegetables out of the picture, as they will help to keep your plants strong without daily watering. An example is the Earthbox, but you can make your own self watering planter with not much in the way of supplies as well.
A hanging tomato planter is a great approach to putting tomatoes in places where they can’t normally be grown. In addition, there are a lot of advantages to using these planters. The plants don’t need to be staked, as they hang down out of the planter and are self supporting. The soil is prepared ahead of time, and you can work in the necessary amounts of organic matter and fertilizer. If you are troubled with disease, you can even opt for a soilless mix that will eliminate the problem of soil borne disease. A mix of perlite, vermiculite, and peat moss is a popular mix, and has been proven over time to perform well.
One recently popular approach is to grow tomatoes in an upside down tomato planter. The advantage to upside down planters is the the stress is taken off the main stem of the plant since it doesn’t have to drape over the side of the planter. The Topsy Turvy planter has popularized this approach, and the good folks at Felknor have followed it up with the Tomato tree, which allows you to plant up to three plants at once, and it comes with a self supporting stand. This is important because these planters get fairly heavy once loaded with soil and then watered appropriately.
If you are going to garden a tomato bed, there are a few quick tomato growing tips to get you started.
First, make sure to plant a variety that will work in your climate. The wrong variety may look good on the label, but if it’s too hot or too dry in your area, no amount of fertilizer or TLC will help your plants yield any fruit. So check the label first, and save yourself a lot of time.
Be sure to prepare the soil well, starting with a lot of organic matter like rotted compost. Work it in well, and work in some tomato fertilizer ahead of time as well. Be sure to use a fertilizer that is lower in nitrogen, to keep the plant focussed on growing fruit and not just leaves. They will look impressive but won’t give your anything to eat.
Staking or somehow supporting the plant is usually necessary if you aren’t using a hanging planter. If you actually use a stake like a simple wooden stake, then your may want to tie the plant to it with some twine, and it may be simpler to prune the plant to make it easy to tie to the stake.
Water often as they will need at least one inch of water a week. Mulch with an organic mulch, or you can try one of the commercial mulches that are supposed to accelerate the ripening of the fruit.
Give these tips a chance, and you will be seeing some great results in your tomato garden.

Arthritis Treatments for Your Dog
Dogs age as people do and often have to combat similar health issues. One top health issue faced by many dogs worldwide is arthritis. This can begin showing its appearance as your dog ages with his or her slowing down, having difficulties getting up quickly, walking up and down stairs, and even handling cold and damp weather in an enthusiastic, energetic manner.
What basically happens is that arthritis works at the joints of your dog’s body, just as it does in human bodies, resulting in stiff and often difficult and painful range of motion movements for bodies.
Dogs, like people in the beginning, often try to hide the pain and act young and youthful, denying the aging process. It’s a natural reaction.
Note, though, that out in the wild, dogs that cannot keep up with their packs are shunned, abandoned or simply left out.
So how will you be able to know about your own dog? How can you tell if it’s in pain?
Look for signs over time. See if your dog walks slower, is slower to come to your calls and commands. See if the dog needs more rest than usual, whimpers or cries, is sluggish during cold mornings and rainy times.
Also have your dog checked by a vet regularly. Vets can test your dog for averse aging symptoms checking their range of motion, using xrays as needed to check internal related issues, take blood samples to review findings and administer medicine or advice on home remedies like using some over-the-counter medications that humans use.
Arthritis Treatment Options for Dogs
Some of the more common treatments include:
1) Pain-reducing help – Your vet has injections and pills for treating pain. Do not give any human medications out unless they are approved by your vet. And note that some medical treatments may result in kidney and liver problems, so those areas of health will need to be monitored regularly during check ups, too.
2) Supplements - Glucosamine is known to help lessen arthritis symptoms. This supplement replaces joint fluid. Many dogs see an improvement while on the supplement. Work with the vet on the correct dosage and whether you need liquid or pill form.
3) Diet and herbs – A holistic canine diet as approved by your vet can help, too. The diet often includes the preparation and cooking of fresh foods like lima beans, kale and salmon plus some Chinese herbs.
4) Acupuncture – Acupuncture needles inserted by a professional in the industry can help with symptoms, too. Sessions average from one to 30 minutes.
Note aging doesn’t happen overnight. So your treatments should not either. Work with your dog and vet to include small changes gradually into your dog’s life. Joints get stiff with inactivity, so incorporate light exercise into each day.
Pick up an orthopedic dog bed with memory foam to add to his or her comfort. Get some solid pet stairs to help your dog reach places without the added stress to the joints caused by jumping. Set up raised dog bowls to help your dog eat and drink much easier, without having to stretch neck joints, especially on early cold mornings.
Above all, continue to love your best furry friend. Dogs need TLC (tender loving care) just as human do during the aging process.

Fall Flowers, Trees, And Gardens
When most people think of the colors of fall, immediately their minds are filled with images of multicolored maple canopies, newly enhanced by nature with the colors of yellow, orange and red. This is definitely one beautiful image of autumn. Along with other species of deciduous trees, the autumn countryside is ablaze with a colorful palette. However, trees are not the only plants Mother Nature decks out in her autumn best. She also bestows her artistic wonders on a number of flowering plants; many of which when added to your garden design plans or yard will help add a touch of autumn beauty to your home landscape.
We all know those people who when the first warm days of spring arrive, they are at the local nurseries filling their cars with numerous flats of flowering annuals to add spring colors to the flower beds. However, the ones who return in the autumn and repeat the cycle are the true landscaping enthusiasts.
One of the best reasons to plant perennials in autumn is because the soil is still warm from summer. The warm soil will encourage young roots to grow, and they will continue to grow on into the winter until the ground freezes. If winters are mild where you live, the roots may continue to grow all winter. Then in the spring, the roots will begin new growth and the plant will develop at a faster rate. Waiting until spring, however, will cause the plant to get a slower start due to the cooler soils, whereas the plants which went into the ground in the fall are on their way to being well-established.
The question is when do you start with fall flowers? Well, unless you live in a relatively warm climate, autumn is not when you start. If you do, your enjoyment will be cut short if Old Man Winter comes through with an early icy blast. In the North, early August is considered a good time to start. Further south, however, you may need to wait until early September to be sure temperatures are not too hot.
When you arrive at the nursery to select your fall posies, some of the plants which will help add autumn color to your landscaping ideas include chrysanthemums, flowering cabbages and dusty miller. However, you need not limit your choices to only the hardy flowers which stand a chance of surviving the first frost. Tender annuals add a lovely touch and though their contribution may be short-lived, it can be spectacular. A perfect example of this type of flower is the marigold. These little beauties are the perfect fall colors of gold, yellow and orange. Though it may sound financially crazy to pay for plants which will live but a brief time, consider the fact you will be paying fall, not spring prices. Fewer people plant flowers in the fall than those who do in the spring, so prices are lower.
Though color may be the first thought in the mind of a landscaping and garden design enthusiast, be it spring or fall, there are two other things to consider in selecting your plants form and texture. When we say orm it basically means the shape of the plant. Contrasting shapes in your landscape will enhance the visual interest; for instance, a mound-shaped plant coupled with a more spiky-looking one. You can also add form to your landscape by varying the shape of the leaves in the collection. Texture on the other hand tends to be more of a visual matter, enhanced by the shape of the leaves and flowers. And be sure not to limit your selections to just flowering plants. Foliage-only plants can add colors other than green to the landscape. If desired, tuck in a few autumn flowers close by.

Installing Water Wall Fountains Outdoors
Nothing beats the sound of falling water for calming your nerves and helping you to de-stress. No matter how large or small your garden may be, there is a style of water wall fountain that will suit your taste and the decor of your garden. Water wall fountains are not at all difficult to install. The basic necessity is a wall of some kind on which you can mount a fountain mask and basin to bring the sight and sound of falling water into your outdoor living space.
Water wall fountains give the image that the water is coming from a spring hidden in the depths of the wall. You can insert the tubing of the wall fountain into the wood or mortar in the wall so that it is hidden from view. If you have greenery or ivy growing on the wall, this is the perfect hiding place and you won’t have to try to make holes of any kind in the wall through which you can insert the tubing.
The water comes to the fountainhead in the mask on the wall from the water in the basin by means of a pump. You will need to have an electrical connection in order for the pump to operate and you can also have lighting to illuminate the wall fountain and the falling water at night.
Before you start to install the water wall fountain on the garden wall, you do need to do some preparatory work. First you have to make sure that the wall is level and if you have the basin close to the ground, you will also have to ensure that the ground is level. Without doing this bit of preparation, you could install the wall fountain and then find that the surroundings are uneven and this will make it look as if you have installed the fountain on an angle.
With the many types of fountain masks that you can purchase online and off for your water wall fountain, it is possible to have the water spouting from any type of image that you wish. If you are a dog lover for example, you can have the water spouting from the mouth of a dog or if you want to have the images of Old World wall fountains, you can choose to have the mask of a gargoyle.
This mask is not quite ready to install on the wall right away. It, too, needs a little preparatory work. In order for the tubing to fit behind the mask on the wall, you need to glue small pieces of cork on the back so that it extends from the wall for a short distance to accommodate the tubing that will bring the water from the basin.
To thread the tubing to the mouth of the fountainhead in water wall fountains, you only have to cut off a piece that is long enough to extend from the mask to the basin. Slide an elbow fitting onto the end of the tubing and connect the rest of the tubing to this fitting and then to the pump.
The basin of the water wall fountain is very critical to the operation of the fountain. It must be watertight to avoid water leaking out onto the ground or onto any surrounding patio statuary. The pump must be covered with water at all times. If it isn’t, it will burn out very quickly. When you are certain that the basin is watertight, then you can fill it with water, insert the pump and plug it into an electrical outlet.

Improve Mobility Of Your Pet. Get Dog Steps, Pet Stairs Or Dog Ramps!
Why should you buy dog steps? Can not the dog use the steps used by all other members of the family? The term dog steps is used to refer to portable steps used to help the dog climb up to various objects like couches, cars, beds etc.
Humans use steps to travel from the lower portion of the house to the upper portion. However, we do not use steps to climb into the car or in your bed. Hence, we often find it difficult to understand why dogs need steps.
Would you need steps if your bed or car was so high that you had to jump to get into it? The answer, obviously, is Yes! Well the car, dog beds, couch or the table is considered to be of normal height from a human’s perspective.
However, try thinking from the perspective of the dog and you will understand that dog steps are not fancy products purchased by ultra rich pet owners out to spoil their pet dogs.
These steps are purchased even by the average pet owner because it helps the pet perform many tasks which we take for granted because of our height.
If all humans were two feet tall, then we all would be using steps to climb on to four feet high beds and three feet high couches. Have you now understood the importance of dog steps? Note these other important points about them.
- The most essential requirement of pet stairs is that they must be portable. Unless you plan to buy two stairs, it always makes sense to opt for one which is portable.
- You cannot anticipate all the instances when your pet dog would need the assistance of the stairs. Hence, just get one which can be moved from one place to another, a portable unit.
-You can pack the pet stairs and take them on vacations as well. It is better to carry the stairs around rather than carrying the pet around all over the place.
- Never compromise on the sturdiness of the stairs. Humans may fall off ladders and yet retain the confidence to use them again. The same need not be true for pets.
- You may find it difficult to convince your pet to use pet stairs if it suffered an injury due to the collapse of the stairs in the past. As the pet grows older, it will neither have the energy to climb nor the confidence to use stairs
- If your pet is unable to climb even the short steps in the stairs, you can opt for dog ramps. Just like any other ramp, these ramps consist of a short smooth incline. The pet can simply avoid climbing and can walk up to its destination.
Most manufacturers ensure that there is sufficient grip on dog ramps. The possibility of the pet slipping on the ramp and sliding down is non existent. The enhanced grip is very useful if you plan to use the pet ramp outside your house.
Opt for sturdy and yet light weight dog ramps so that you can carry them around in the event the dog is taken to the vet or some other place.

Search Online for an Affordable Term Life Insurance Quote
It costs nothing to search the various insurance providers online and request a term life insurance quote. Most insurance companies have information about the types of life insurance policies that they sell as well as a screen for you to use in which you enter your personal information needed to determine the cost of the quote. No two policies are alike and each person receives a quote that is related to one’s age, gender, health and in some cases one’s occupation.
A standard term life insurance policy does require a medical examination. Therefore when you receive a quote it is important to keep in mind that this is only a quote and may or may not be the exact price you pay for the policy.
To get started with requesting an affordable quote, you should visit the sites of several insurance providers. Answer the questions on the site to determine which type of policy would be more affordable for you. The quote you receive from each one will depend on the answers that you provide for these questions, your age, gender and whether or not you smoke.
In order to shop around and find the cheapest term life insurance quote, it is important that you provide the same information on each site and choose the same amount of coverage and length of term. The younger you are when you look for life insurance, the cheaper the quote will be. It is often more difficult for older people to obtain affordable life insurance because of age and the many health conditions that can come into play as you get older.
When you are ready to request a term life insurance quote, the first type of information you have to provide is the state in which you live. You can usually select the state from a drop down menu. If your state is not listed, then you will not be able to purchase a policy from this company. You then provide your date or birth, your weight and height and choose the answer to a question about your use of tobacco at present or in the past.
The next step in getting a quote for term life insurance involves choosing the type of policy you want to have. The best rates are issued to consumers of a young age and those with not health problems. Some of the medical conditions that could affect the premium rate you would have to pay include:
-cardiovascular disease
-cancer
-depression
-sleep apnea
-asthma
-diabetes
-hypertension
-kidney disease
-liver disease
-Chrohn’s Disease
If you do not have any of these conditions, you will receive the preferred or lowest possible life insurance rates. As a rule if you have a terminal or life-threatening medical condition, you may be turned down for a standard policy.
You can, however, look for a term life insurance quote that does not require a medical examination. Even if you answer no to all the health-related questions, you will likely need to have a medical exam to prove that you are in good health in order to obtain a standard term life insurance policy.
The amount of coverage and the length of the term will also factor into the cost of the insurance and will be reflected in the quote you receive. You can experiment with varying amounts and terms to reach a bottom line that you can afford in your monthly budget.

The Ins and Outs of No Medical Exam Life Insurance
It is very easy and convenient to get no medical exam life insurance. This form of life insurance is readily available online on many insurance provider websites.
In addition to offering you the ability to request a free quote to see how much this insurance will cost you, many of the sites have a wide variety of information for you to read to gain a greater understanding of life insurance in general.
While it is easier to get life insurance without medical to prove that you are in good health, it is more expensive that regular life insurance. This is because you pose a greater risk for the insurance provider who has no way of knowing whether or not you have a life-threatening illness.
No medical exam life insurance is often called guaranteed life insurance because the premiums that you pay when you take out the policy will remain the same for the duration of the term. You should request several quotes so that you can compare the prices of premiums and types of coverage.
The quotes are free and you are not under any obligation to purchase a policy. Once you do find a quote that meets your budget and needs in life insurance, you can complete the application process online or by telephone. There are flexible payment options to choose from, such as making the first monthly payment by credit card, choosing monthly payments, quarterly or annual payments.
No medical exam life insurance is renewable so that when the term expires you can renew for another term. The typical terms of such policies range from ten to thirty years, but you do need to make sure you meet the age requirements of the insurance company.
This is because most life insurance policies that do not require a medical exam cannot be renewed beyond age 60 or 65. If you are age 45, for example, the longest term you would be permitted to purchase in a policy would be 20 years.
You have instant coverage from the time that you make your first payment on no medical exam life insurance. There is no risk involved in this for you because the company does give you 30 days in which you can take your time and assess the coverage to make sure it is exactly what you want.
If you decide that you are not really satisfied with the policy, you can cancel it at any time during this initial 30 day period and receive a full refund of any premiums you have paid.
While most life insurance policies contracts are lengthy documents that require you to submit documentation from a health care professional, this is not the case with no medical exam life insurance when you purchase a policy online.
You can simply type in your name and this electronic signature is sufficient to purchase the policy. If you wish, you can complete the process by telephone, in which case your voice will serve as proof of your identity and doubles as your signature.
You can choose between $25,000 and $250,000 in coverage to make sure that you family has the protection it needs for its finances when you are no longer there to provide for them. The insurance company will notify you of your acceptance immediately and you will receive the policy in your email inbox.

Maintenance Tips for Wall Water Features
There is more to enjoying the gentle sounds of falling water as a form of relaxation and of purifying and cooling the air around you. These features do need to be maintained on a regular basis to keep them looking and sounding great all the time.
Evaporation of water is part of the water cycle, so the water naturally evaporates from the garden wall fountain all the time whether you have it indoors or outdoors. This means you do have to check the water levels and top up the water when it is necessary.
The rate of evaporation in wall water features depends on the conditions of the surroundings. If you have such a feature installed on the patio the air conditions of the outdoors will have a great affect on how fast the water does evaporate. During the hot summer months, you will find that it evaporates more quickly than in the spring and fall.
Indoors, the location of the wall water features has an effect on the rate of evaporation. If you have the feature installed close to the air-conditioning unit or heaters, then it will evaporate much faster than if it was installed farther away from these essential items in a home.
For the first few months after you make the purchase, you have to constantly check the levels of water to get a sense of how quickly the water evaporates. Once you establish a schedule, then you don’t have to be checking on a daily basis, because you know how often it needs to be topped up.
If you neglect the water levels in the wall water feature you have installed, it can cause the pump to burn out because there is no water running through it. In addition, the manifold delivery system may fail and cause spraying, which will cause damage to the feature itself.
The mirror or glass of the feature also needs to be cleaned. This should be done at least once a week and in order to do so, you have to shut the unit down. Standard glass cleaner is sufficient to use for this cleaning regimen, unless it is a resin wall fountain. Special cleaner may be needed for this type of fountain.
Once every three or four months, you should also drain all the water from the wall water feature and fill it with clean water. This may have to be done sooner if the water you are using in the feature is not of good quality or if you have it installed outdoors.
Once you drain all the water out of the unit, take a rag and wipe out the inside of the water reservoir. You don’t have to use any cleaning agents, but if you do use even a mild soap, you should rinse the reservoir thoroughly before you start refilling the feature.
The buildup of calcium is a common problem in wall fountains, especially if you use hard water. This will give the glass a cloudy appearance no matter how often you clean it. One way you can combat this problem is to use distilled water in the feature.
The pump also requires regular maintenance because calcium can build up here too. You may need to clean the pump by removing it from the unit and letting it soak overnight in a solution of CLR or vinegar. This makes it easier to scrub off the calcium residue.
Using these maintenance tips will let you enjoy your wall water feature for many years to come.

Understanding Different Types of Life Insurance
Like all types of insurance coverage, life insurance is one you hope never to use, but it is coverage that gives you peace of mind in knowing that when you pass away your loved ones will be provided for. There are two main types of life insurance – term life and whole life.
Of these, term life is the cheapest because you purchase a policy for a specific term and the policy only pays out if you die during that term. Whole life policies, on the other hand, are types of permanent insurance that also has an investment built in.
Within each category there are different types of life insurance. If you purchase a level term life insurance, the premiums you pay remain the same throughout the life of the policy as does the amount of insurance coverage.
This is the most common type of term insurance because in the other type, decreasing term, the amount of money your beneficiaries will receive from the insurance decreases in increments throughout the term.
The result is that if you die in the final year of the term of the policy, your beneficiary could receive very little, if anything at all. Just about all term life insurance policies are level term policies.
There are several different types of whole life insurance policies:
· A general whole life insurance policy does have a savings account in conjunction with a death benefit. You pay the premiums each month on an amount of money that the insurance company will pay to your beneficiary and savings accrue in an account based on a portion of that premium and dividends that the company pays into the account. You cannot increase the amount of the death benefit after you purchase such a policy.
· Universal life insurance allows you to make changes to your coverage during the life of the policy, but you do need to pass a medical exam to show that you are healthy in order to make these changes. As part of this type of life insurance, you also have a cash value account in which you do save money at the current rate of interest in the market. After paying the premiums for a number of years, you may build up enough money in this account to lower your premiums. You do have to be constantly aware of how much money is left in this account because when it runs out and you do not start making the premiums again, your life insurance policy may be cancelled.
· Variable Life Insurance provides you with an opportunity to be able to invest in the stock market along with providing you with a death benefit. There is a greater risk in types of life insurance like this because you could lose some or all of the savings you have accrued in the life insurance over the years. If the investments lose money on the market, this affects the amount of your death benefit.
· Variable Universal Life combines two types of life insurance – variable and universal so that you get the benefit of both. You can invest in stocks and mutual funds and increase your amount of coverage at any time during the life of your policy.
Each of these types of life insurance carries different premiums. The cost of a policy also depends on your age and health at the time you take out the policy or renew it.

Novelty Cupcake Decorations
Cupcake recipes are a great way to liven up everyday cooking. But even kids will get tired of them after a while, and then you’d have to find other ways to whet their appetite. So why not just get creative and decorate your cupcakes? It’s not that hard, especially when you have ready-made decorations available at most stores. The right finishing touches can turn a simple cupcake recipe from bland and boring to absolutely mouthwatering!
The easiest way to decorate your cupcakes is to use cake toppers. Most of us only see them on fancy wedding cakes, but they also work well on cupcakes and other small pastries. Many manufacturers offer novelty cake decorations that add a quirk touch to even the simplest recipes. Here are some of the most popular.
Animal toppers
If you’re hosting a kids’ party, you can’t go wrong with animal toppers. There’s the usual fare like kitties and puppies, but why not try something unusual? For instance, edible frog cake toppers add a lot of cheer (and perhaps some weirdness) to the table. They can range from cute to downright weird, but they’re all quite colorful and are sure to steal the show!
If you have time, try working on a cupcake zoo. Just put your finished cupcakes on a large platter, spread on some green or brown frosting, and add a variety of animal toppers. The kids will have a blast picking their favorite critters from the bunch. Make it more convincing by adding chocolate sprinkles to make it look like real ground, and maybe a few sugar flowers
Insect toppers
They’re technically animals, but insect toppers are definitely in a class of their own! They work particularly well on Halloween cupcakes. If you don’t have the time or skill to make convincing spiders, just stick a sugar spider on top and you’re good to go. If you want a bit of color, you can also use edible ladybug cake toppers. Fill the whole top with little ladybugs and it’ll actually look like it’s crawling with insects!
Insect toppers also go well with a little decoration. Spiders, for example, can go with a simple web made from chocolate frosting. Just pipe out some concentric circles on the cupcake with a pastry bag, and make a few fine lines from the center outwards. The finer the lines, the more real it will look. Put a spider or two in the middle and you’ve got the perfect treat for a Halloween party.
For a kid with a major sweet tooth, there’s no better way to top off a cake that with another sugary treat. Fortunately, there are also cake toppers made to look like desserts, perfect for serious food (or dessert) lovers. Food cake toppers range from simple candy canes to pies, ice creams, and even fancy multilayered cakes. And since you’re indulging anyway, add a big dollop of frosting to make it even more filling.
Edible ice cream cake toppers are among the most popular designs. Some of them even come in actual ice cream flavors, so it’s just like having the real thing! If you want, you can add a scoop of ice cream to the cupcake instead of frosting, then just stick the toppers in.
Costume toppers
Are you hooked on a particular era or culture? Try looking for cake toppers that show your interest. Some can be hard to find, but there are lots of options for music, art, and other common hobbies. Sports-themed toppers are popular among grownups, so they might be a good idea for adult get-togethers. You can get individual toppers for each of your guests to make it more personal.
Another thing you can do is match your toppers with your party theme. If you’re serving Mexican food, for example, your dessert can go with edible Mexican cake toppers. You can find most of the things that remind you of the theme, such as chili peppers, maracas, and Mexican hats. Make it as colorful as possible—after all, Mexican culture is all about being festive!
Toy toppers
Toys appeal to both the young and the young at heart. Toy-themed cake toppers make the perfect finishing touch for your kid’s birthday party, or for a grownup with a special hobby. There’s a big range of toy toppers out there, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find one that you like. Balls, cars, trucks, and rattles are some of the most popular.
Some stores sell topper sets that go with a particular theme, which can make your cupcake decorating easier. For a girls’ party, for example, you can set the mood with flower or heath shaped toppers. Boys tend to be more playful, so you can look for whatever their favorite toy is. Some of the more popular are edible car cake toppers, trucks, sports gear, and action figures.

Scholarships in Difficult Times – Financial Aid Still Available
News of college scholarships continue to make the headlines. Even though some scholarships awards have closed down, there still are new ones making the news every day. This means that the money is still flowing – but no one knows for how long. If you are planning on going to college in the fall, and need some scholarship money, here are some recent college scholarships that have been announced.
College President Gives Personal Bonus for Student Scholarships
The Associated Press reported that a new college scholarship was opened at the University of Florida in Gainesville, when the college president, Bernie Machen, was given a salary bonus of $285,000. Instead of pocketing the money – which he had every right to do – he immediately put the money into a scholarship program called Opportunity Scholars, and targeted its money for families that make less than $40,000 per year, and whose parents never graduated from college. This money will enable a number of future college students to continue (or start) their college education.
Were Your Parents Injured While Working for the States of Minnesota or Wisconsin?
If your parents had worked at some time in either Wisconsin or Minnesota, and were injured or killed, then you may be entitled to receive college scholarship money. The SFM Foundation, which is a non-profit organization connected to a regional workers’ compensation group, offers the scholarship.
The scholarship is awarded to students who are pursuing a 4-year degree, and their parents have become disabled or fatally injured in work-related accidents. You must be a resident of either state when you apply and be between the ages of 16 and 25. Standard considerations of academics, extracurricular activities and community involvement will be given to determine the successful applicant. The awards will be for amounts between $1,000 and $5,000.
New Scholarships Being Granted by BizAcademy
The BizAcademy, which is directed by the Salesforce Foundation, has granted 6 scholarships for college students who completed the week-long program. After presenting a program designed to teach entrepreneurship and living skills to students, they chose those that they felt were the best for high school scholarships, and then offered 20 of them internships. The scholarships were for the amounts of either $2,500 or $5,000.
While Salesforce is dedicated in combining business with community services, and is seeking to model it with its actions, it chooses student financial aid candidates according to grades, community service, business potential, leadership and motivation, as well as having a family need. Although this BizAcademy was held in San Francisco, it is looking to expand it to the cities of New York, London, Dublin, and Tokyo this year.”
Scholarships Are Available for Working Moms
A lot of things can happen in a woman’s life that can cause her to not complete a degree. These sidetracks can last from a few months to several years. The good thing, though, is that a sidetrack does not have to be permanent. There are education scholarships that can enable a woman who has not completed her degree to finish.
One benefit of these scholarship programs that are attractive is that there are some for both traditional classes and also some for online classes. This enables there to be a number of possibilities as to how the desired degree can be obtained. There are also some scholarships available for women who are aiming to get a graduate degree or fellowship, too. A good place to get started is to look at the Web site of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).
College scholarships are one thing that will continue to be affected by the economy. Right now, however, there still is a good chance to get an academic scholarship for the coming fall semester (2009). Be sure to apply to as many scholarships as you can find that you think you are good fit for, and make sure that you qualify for them, too, by keeping up with good grades, have community involvement, and write the college scholarship essay as best as you can. Start early, too, in order to be able to apply to many of them, and then get the rest of your money through student loans.

The Lights Before Lamps
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4
When most people think of the invention of the electric lamp, they think of Thomas Edison. However, Edison is not the only person who worked on the artificial light that so many of us now take for granted.
An earlier time
There was once a period in history where street lamps did not exist. Once the sun went down at night, people were forced to sit at home with only a candle or possibly an oil lamp or stone fireplace to light their way.
These old oil lamps looked something like a tea kettle, and they are the ancient ancestors of the electric lights that we know today. To look at the two of them, you wouldn’t see any sort of resemblance; however, this is the ancestor of the modern light bulb. It has taken thousands of years and as many inventors to bring us the lights that we know today.
A fire in the middle of the house
While it might be hard to imagine, the smoldering oil lamps were actually an improvement and a welcome invention. Even prior to their existence was a time when there were no lamps at all.
Several hundred years ago, near where modern day Paris stands, was a town known as Lutetia. Like similar villages, Lutetia was made up of small wooden huts that had thatched or tile roofs.
In the center of each of these huts was a fire pit. There would be a hole in the roof designed to allow the smoke out; however, much of it would stay in the room making it difficult to see or breathe.
This fire was used for everything. It was a lamp to see by. It was a stove to cook on. And it was a fireplace surround to warm themselves by. Of course, it was not a very safe method, and many homes caught fire and burned down.
A fear of the flame
People in those times had a strong fear of fire, which is of no surprise. While the fire was incredibly useful, it could also be a terrible enemy. One stray spark and a useful flame could be a destroyer of lives and homes.
Chimneys
It took several hundred years for chimneys to be invented. They were first seen in Europe, and then later on in Russia. In Russia, even in more modern times, there were still peasants that lived in chimney-less huts heated by a stove.
In order to prevent suffocation from the smoke, residents had to open their doors to allow the smoke out. Of course this was problematic in the harsh Russian winters, forcing them to put children to bed at all times of the day covered by sheepskin coats as protection.
Home heating and lighting has come a long way in the recent centuries. We have gone from burning fire pits to fluorescent light bulbs, electric fireplaces, and central heat. The risk of a fire burning down our homes is much less than it used to be, and most people are able to live in relative light and more comfort than their ancestors did.

Beneficial Reasons for Using a Wall Water Fountain
Wall water fountains is very beautiful inside a home and adds a touch of elegance to any room. Just sitting in the room and listening to the sound of falling water will help you feel more relaxed and at peace with yourself. Although you may make the purchase and install the wall fountain as a decorative item in your home, the sight and sound of falling water is one of the elements of Feng Shui and helps to create positive energy.
The air in your home contains positive ions that contribute to feelings of stress and make you feel ill due to allergens in the air. These ions come from the operation of all the electrical appliances you have in your home and you are not even aware of the ions they emit into the air each day.
Fresh air and moving water contains negative ions and when these reach the bloodstream they help you feel more energetic. Much research has been carried out on the positive effects that a wall water fountain can bring to your home. Studies show that such a feature can help to alleviate the symptoms of depression, boost your energy levels and relieve stress.
As a wall water fountain enriches the air inside your home, it also reduces the amount of air pollution that exists. As the water splashes over the wall it ruptures the water molecules and traps the impurities in the air taking them out of circulation. The running water is constantly working in this manner to purify the air.
If you enjoy meditating on a daily basis, having a wall water fountain in the room of your choice will do wonders for helping you to relax. In this case, your choice of fountain has a direct bearing on what you want to achieve with the sound of falling water. You need to select a unit in which the water falls softly because hard splashes of water will detract you from your meditation.
Indoor wall fountains can be works of art that will amaze your guests. Install a fountain on the wall of the foyer so that it is the first thing visitors to your home will see. It is the perfect welcome message telling others that your home is a place of peace and contentment.
Almost any kind of wall is suitable as the location of a wall water fountain. You do have to be careful in the choice because a small wall is not suitable for a vertical design. If you want to place a wall fountain on a short wall, then your best choice would be a horizontal design that will take up less space. There are some fountains that are light enough to simply hang on the wall in the same way that you would hang a picture. Heavier designs need to be mounted into the studs of the wall.
Before you start hanging a wall water fountain you should carefully read the instructions to determine the method recommended by the manufacturer. You should have the electrical outlet for the fountain directly behind the unit so that none of the wires will be visible and mar the effect you want to create.
You do need to perform regular maintenance on the water levels once a week and give the water wall fountain a good cleaning from time to time. Other than that there is little to do with wall water fountains other than enjoying them to the fullest.

Decorate your Home with Lampshades
When it comes to decorating your home, it is indeed practical to invest on furniture that has the perfect balance between form and function. Furniture that serves useful purposes while at the same gives elegant beauty and style to the room is what will make your home exquisite and comfortable.
Lamp shades as most people would agree is one of the most practical investments you can make for your home. Stylish and useful, beautiful and functional—lampshades are indeed some of the few furniture that can serve both a function and be a beautiful adornment to your house.
.
Endless resources on home decoration are widely available. Online you will find yourself bombarded with millions of information on tips on how to decorate your home. However, there are really no standards or rules when decorating your own home. It’s all a matter of personal taste and choices.
Your personal taste is the best guide in coming up with a style for your home that will reflect your own personality and not that of the author of the interior decorating magazine that you purchased. Of course, you will still need help along the way and it wouldn’t hurt to incorporate other people’s ideas and suggestions on how to make your home lovelier.
The trick to avoid information overload is to carefully browse through all the information but let your mind absorb only those that have real value. Trash into the recycle bin those that only pretend to help you.
With that said, here are some useful home decoration tips that will help you make the most out of your lamp shades as beautiful adornments for your home:
Planning
The first step in home decoration is planning. First you have to envision what it is that you like to do. Do you intend to give the living room a make over? Do you want to brighten up your bedroom with lampshades? Do you feel like the paintings on your wall need accentuating?
After you’ve established your objectives, next thing you have to do is to research. As mentioned earlier, millions of information about home decoration can easily send your brain with information overload. So it’s very important to play filter in, filter out with the resources that you come up with. Filter in what’s useful, filter out what’s not. Look through magazines and books for ideas but make sure that at the end of the day, your personal taste will have the last say. Choosing lampshadesNow that you have a solid plan for your decoration project, next thing on the list is to choose lampshades. A couple of things to bear in mind when making your purchase include:
- Size
Size really matters. Especially in the case of lampshade buying. If you intend to use it as a central light, keep the size of the room in mind. You don’t want to end up with a lampshade that could barely light up a small part of the room. Make sure that the size of the lampshade is sufficient for the size of the room.
- Fitting
Fittings vary according to purpose so it is imperative that the shade you buy is suitable for the purpose it will serve.
- Shape
Shape is another major factor in lampshade purchase. You have a choice among drum, square, empire, bell, oval, hexagon and coolie lamp shades.
- Material
There are also many materials you can choose from—paper, fabric, silk, leather, faux leather, glass and many more. Make sure that the shade material you choose can handle the wattage of the bulb you intend to use.
Also, your choice should depend on the type of lighting of the lamp. If you plan to use it as a source of general or task lighting, opt for transparent shades. Opaque shades on the other hand are ideal for lampshades to be used as decorative accents.
Complement the theme of the roomThe overall theme and design of the room should be a major factor on how you will use your lampshade to decorate it. It is important that your shade of choice blends harmoniously with the surroundings.
For example, modern shades such as black lamp shades and leather lampshades complement a room with a contemporary style. On the other hand, if the room has a more traditional style, use pleated shades to decorate it. Use lampshades for accent lighting.
An excellent way to use lampshades for decoration is to use it for accent lighting. Lampshades such as table lamps and swing arm wall lamps are great to use to accentuate a décor such as a painting, photo frame or a plant. Emphasizing a décor with light can contribute to the elegance and warm ambience of the room.
Traffic in the areaWhen using lampshades to decorate a certain room, make sure that you consider the traffic in that area. Place your lampshade in a place that will not be a hurdle for people when they walk and move around. But of course it does not mean that you will have to place it an obscure spot where it could hardly be seen.
It is a good idea to put it in a clear corner or beside the couch or a bed. Just make sure that your lampshade will not be in the way and will not give the room a cluttered look. Lampshades as mood setterLight is a great way to create mood and set the tone of the room.
Use a lampshade with low lighting to make the bedroom cozy and warm. While a chandelier shade with bright light that give off a happy atmosphere is ideal for living areas and dining rooms. Decorating your home with lampshades is a good way to put your creativity and imagination into use.
With lampshades, you can easily transform a plain dull room into one that speaks of comfort, elegance and good taste all at the same time.

Fixing Flooring Problems
When you buy a home, you may find that the flooring looks a bit drab and dull. Often the structure and quality of the materials of the floor is just fine. It may be that the floor just needs a new “face” to look gorgeous once again. There are several common problems found in older floors. Following are some examples and how you can solve them.
That Annoying Squeak
Many old homes have absolutely gorgeous solid hardwood flooring. Problem is that with time the wood boards tend to swell and rub against one another causing a horrible squeaking sound. To fix squeaky floors, try the following:
- Spread baby powder. If the boards are only touching slightly, sprinkling baby powder between the cracks may solve your problem for awhile. Baby powder is cheap, non-toxic, and the excess is easy to clean up. It may not actually CURE the problem, but it is so quick and inexpensive that you can do the treatment again and again as the problem resurfaces.
- If you find there is only select boards that are squeaking, make sure they are still intact and secure. Often a particular board will warp over time causing it to lift from the sub-floor (or from the joist directly depending on age). You may be able to remove the nails and reattach to fix, or remove the entire board and replace if the damage is extensive.
- Look underneath the floor to inspect if possible. Many old floors squeak because they have become misshapen over time or the joists or sub-floor beneath them has settled. If you can get under the floor to inspect the joists you may see obvious gaps. Simply buy wood shims (intended to properly install windows and doors) and tap them into the gaps for a tight as new fit. This is also a place to start if the flooring is anything but wood planks and has a squeak. You may be able to solve your problem without expensive replacement or repairs.
It Just Looks Bad
Often the structure of the floor is just fine, but the appearance of it isn’t. If you have a solid wood floor, you can sand and refinish to bring it back to its original glory. There is no easy answer on how to sand a wood floor. To do it correctly it is just going to take time and elbow grease. There are chemical products that will help remove old varnish and wax. You can rent a belt or circular sander to get up anything that the chemicals don’t remove and to get a smooth finish. For the best finish, start with a courser grade sandpaper and repeat with a finer grade. To stain the floor, you can either use a traditional stain followed by several thin coats of polyurethane or try a two in one product that does both at once. To get the most true, even color, first treat the wood with a pre-conditioner before staining. Always do a test area in an inconspicuous area to make sure you have the color you are looking for as different woods will turn different colors and often the color is nothing like what the packaging on the stain shows.
Concrete floors are often another unsightly surface in older homes. Many people want to bring the floor back to looking clean without the expense and labor involved in installing an entirely new floor. This is especially true in more utilitarian spaces like laundry rooms and workshops.
It is easy to learn how to remove oil stains from concrete. These same steps can be used to clean the concrete floor of a garage or even to clean a concrete driveway or parking area.
- First try simple warm water, detergent, and a scrub brush. Many oil stains will come up with just these products and some time and effort.
- Purchase a degreaser. Degreasers are specifically created to bind to the oil and in essence “eat it”. By sure to closely follow the directions on the label and use safety precautions as they substances are usually very toxic.
- Try muriatic acid. This chemical is good for cleaning all sorts of things off of all sorts of surfaces. Best part about it is that it is very inexpensive. You can find it at most any home improvement or hardware store, usually by mineral spirits and paint thinner. Muriatic acid does tend to bleach the concrete a bit, so it may be best to use this option if you are willing to clean the entire surface and not just spot treat.
If you feel that the concrete floor is still not as attractive as you had hoped, but you don’t want to actually install a different type of flooring on top of it, consider paint. You can find all kinds of information out there about how to paint a floor. The most durable paint application is an epoxy. Epoxy paints are extremely durable and basically stain and mold/mildew proof. There is a bit of a trick to getting the paint to look just right, so practice on something before applying to your floor. You can even add attractive flecks to the paint for an expensive looking touch.

Ventilation, Washing, and Watering a Window Garden
Ventilation
This must not be neglected; it is as essential to the health of the plant as to the human organization. The best method of providing it is to open the top of the window when the sun’s rays are hottest on the plants. The quantity of air to be given must be proportioned to the outside temperature. In cold, cloudy days, but little, and often none, should be given. Care must be taken never to allow a direct stream of cold air to blow upon any plant.
Washing
This must be done frequently. A plant breathes like an animal, and not through one mouth, but thousands. As is well known, the plant draws up its food from the soil through the roots, in a liquid form. This food, very much diluted, must be concentrated, and thus assimilated to the plant.
We have in the leaves of the plant, a most beautiful arrangement to answer this need. They are filled with “stomata,” or breathing pores, which allow exhalation when moisture is freely supplied, perhaps by garden waterfalls, and check it when the supply falls off. These little mouths are found on both sides of the leaf in most plants, but usually on the lower side in by far the greater number.
They vary in different plants from several hundred to more than one hundred and fifty thousand to a square inch of leaf. Now we are careful in our own persons to bathe daily, lest, as we say, the pores of the skin become obstructed; yet we are willing to allow our plants to go unwashed for a whole winter, when the pores are much smaller, more numerous and delicate, than those of the body.
The rule is obvious: wash the leaves of the plants, both under and upper sides, at least once a week; if oftener, the better. Use water moderately warm and if the plants become very dirty, a little weak soap-suds is beneficial. This washing should be carefully done with a soft sponge or cloth in the case of plants with thick, polished leaves, such as camellias, oranges, and daphnes.
Where plants have hairy leaves, or the substance is soft, water is best applied with a small syringe, fitted with a very fine “rose.” To use this, place the plant on its side in the kitchen sink, syringe it well, turning it from side to side. Let it stand a few minutes for the water to drain off, and return it to its place: it will thank you for its bath by its bright foliage and will likely bring beauty to any garden water features you include.
Never wet the flowers of a plant; water always injures them; nor allow drops of water to stand on any leaves in the sunshine: the rays of the sun form a focus in the drop of water and scorch the leaf. Once a month, at least, wash the stem and branches of all the hard-wooded plants with a soft sponge dipped in lukewarm water; this prevents the lodgment of insects, and contributes to the health of the plant.
Watering
Is one of the most difficult subjects to prescribe by rule, yet there are some rules of general application.
Let it be always done with a watering-pot with a fine rose, such as may be procured at any tin man’s. The advantage of this is, it allows the water to fall drop by drop over the whole surface of the soil, whereas, if a pitcher is used, the plants are deluged, or holes made in the earth by the stream of water, and the roots not infrequently disturbed. Let it be done regularly; the morning is the best time, and once a day.
The surface of the soil should never be allowed to become perfectly dry, nor should it be sodden with moisture. The temperature of the water used is of vital importance. It should neither be cold nor warm, but just the temperature of the atmosphere of the room. Thus no check, or chill, or undue excitement is given to the roots, both roots and branches being equally warm.
A good plan is, to set over night a large pan of water among your flowers, then you will be sure of a sufficiency of water of the proper temperature for the morning watering. If this is too much trouble, remember in watering, it is better to have the water too warm than too cold, that is, of a higher rather than a lower temperature than the roots and branches.
Now as to the quantity of waterno rule of universal application can be prescribed. What is life to one class of plants is death to another. The amount of water necessary to make a calla lily thrive would kill a cactus or a heath, and yet the drought necessary for the cactus would be death to the heath. Keep this in mind when introducing any large water feature.
A good rule, however, is never to allow the soil to become dusty or muddy, and with drainage in potting the latter is easily prevented; by regular watering, the former. Particulars of treatment for different plants will be given when treating of each plant. Never allow water to stand in the saucers of the pots unless the plants are semi-aquatic.

Metropolitan Life Insurance’s Introduction to the Life Insurance Business
When the Metropolitan life insurance Company was founded, the life insurance business had already achieved a fair degree of stability. The agency system, a typical American contribution, had been extensively developed in the previous 25 years. The “agent” had become a very influential element in the business. General agents were appointed to cover specific cities or, in the case of more sparsely populated areas, to represent a company in an entire State.
These men personally contributed to the extraordinary growth of life insurance in the United States, and much competition arose among the companies for good producers and reliable men. The principal policy plans used today were already developed. The straight life policy was the most popular form of coverage, although the Endowment also had a measure of popularity. Term life insurance constituted only a small part of the company’s business, while annuity sales were negligible.
As was characteristic of all business ventures at that time, selling practices in life insurance were much below present standards. It was a period of transition and growing pains. The increase in the number of companies had been too rapid. Many of these mushroom companies were offering extravagant commissions to their agents, and were so lax in the selection of risks and ignorant of methods of premium and reserve calculations that they were not able to meet their obligations.
Doubtful assets had been permitted to appear in their balance sheets. Dividends were sometimes paid which had not been earned. As a result of such ignorance and maladministration, the great majority of life insurance companies which were organized in the East from 1860 to 1869 passed out of existence before 1880. Those which remained in business, however, were sound in their marketing practices and well managed.
That the institution of life insurance in America survived through aggressive, profit seeking competition is due largely to the ability and integrity of many of its early leaders. There were men of stature and vision in the American insurance fieldsuch men as Elizur Wright, the first Insurance Commissioner of Massachusetts, sometimes known as “the father of life insurance in America;” William Barnes, the first Superintendent of the Insurance Department of New York State; Sheppard Homans, a pioneer in American actuarial science; and David Parks Fackler, who, in various actuarial capacities, served to keep many of the young companies on the right track.
Among executive officers and directors of the companies were such vigorous personalities as Henry B. Hyde, of the Equitable; John F. Dryden, of The Prudential; Morris Franklin, of the New York Life; H. B. Claflin, Chauncey M. Depew, Cyrus W. Field, George F. Baker, and Leland Stanford.
It was in this bustling atmosphere of postwar activity that the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company had its beginnings. The roots of the company, in fact, lead back directly to Civil War days when the National Union Life and Limb Insurance Company was launched in 1863 “for the purpose of making insurance upon the lives and limbs and health of the soldiers, sailors, and marines in the Army and Navy of the United States.”
This company, like so many others organized for wartime activity, had to be completely reorganized in the next few years. In 1866 it was divided into the National Life Insurance Company and the National Travelers Insurance Company. The latter organization had planned to write accident insurance, but in the words of its secretary, it soon found this business “troublesome, so much in detail, and so beset with fraudulent claims that we concluded some time since to abandon it.”
Accordingly, by an act of the Legislature of April 9, 1867, this company changed its charter to permit it to write life insurance. Less than one year later it again changed its name and charter, this time to become the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. According to its first President, Dr. James R. Dow, it seemed advisable “to discontinue the accident department and pursue the life insurance business exclusively, under a new and distinctive name, as the old name was not deemed appropriate to a purely life insurance company.”
When the Metropolitan came into corporate being on March 24, 1868, it took over the small home office and field organization of the National Travelers Insurance Company. The President and the Board of Directors continued their respective duties in the newly created Metropolitan and at the same location, 243 Broadway, New York City.
